What the Extension Does

WatchTrail is a browser extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge that quietly tracks what you watch and search on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. It stores a personal watch history and search history locally in your browser so you can resume titles with one click and re-run past searches. Nothing leaves your device.

Data Collected and Stored Locally

While tracking is enabled, the extension reads the following from streaming pages you visit:

• Title name, platform (Netflix / Prime Video), and the watch URL.
• Current playback position and total video duration (from the <video> element).
• Search queries typed into Netflix or Prime Video (read from the page URL).
• Your extension preferences (theme, tracking toggle, completion threshold).

All of this is stored exclusively in your browser's local IndexedDB via Dexie. It never leaves your machine.

What We Do Not Do

• We do not transmit any data over the network.
• We do not use analytics, telemetry, crash reporting, or any third-party SDK.
• We do not require sign-in. There are no user accounts.
• We do not read or interact with any website other than Netflix and Prime Video.
• We do not use remote code. All extension logic is bundled at build time.

Permissions Explained

• storage – Persist your settings and preferences on-device.
• tabs – Open a streaming title or search URL in a new tab when you click an item in the popup. Also used to open the welcome page on first install. Not used to monitor or read tab content.
• alarms – Reserved for future periodic cleanup of old history entries. Currently declared but not actively used.
• Host permissions for *.netflix.com, *.primevideo.com, and amazon.<tld>/gp/video/* – Required so the content script can read playback state, title metadata, and search queries from streaming pages. No page content is transmitted.

Your Data, Your Control

• Options → Tracking enabled — turns all capture off entirely.
• Options → Warning → Clear watch history / Clear searches — wipes your data instantly.
• Uninstalling the extension removes all stored data from your device.
